Requirements for the Major certified prior to fall 2017

 

The major requires 48–49 hours in criminal justice, political science, and other social sciences.

Students must complete the 15-credit Crm J core, 6 credits in Institutional courses, and an additional 9 credits of Crm J electives. At least 12 hours of core or elective courses must be earned at Washington State University

All required course work must be graded course work. Only 3 hours of 490 or 499 (Pass/Fail) may be used as Crm J electives.

Criminal Justice Core Courses (15 credits required)

  • Crm J 101: Intro to the Administration of Criminal Justice
  • Crm J 201: Introduction to Criminological Theory
  • Crm J 320: Criminal Law OR Crm J 420: Criminal Procedure
  • Crm J 330: Crime Control Policies
  • Crm J 450: Ethical Issues in Criminal Justice

Criminal Justice Institutional Courses (6 credits from Crm J courses)

  • Crm J 365, 370, 380, or 385

Criminal Justice Electives (9 credits in Crm J courses)

  • Crm J 205: Realizing Justice in a Multicultural Society
  • Crm J 320: Criminal Law (if not counted for Core)
  • Crm J 365: Juvenile Justice and Corrections (if not counted for Institutional)
  • Crm J 370: Introduction to Policing (if not counted for Institutional)
  • Crm J 380: Criminal Courts (if not counted for Institutional)
  • Crm J 381: Crime and Justice in the Movies
  • Crm J 385: Institutional Corrections (if not counted for Institutional)
  • Crm J 400: Issues in the Administration of Criminal Justice [M] (may be repeated up to 6 credits)

  • Any upper division (300- or 400-level) courses from Political Science

6–7 Hours Required in Approved Research Methods and Quantitative Analysis (Statistics) Courses

  • Crm J 311 or approved methods course (e.g., Soc 320)
  • Crm J 321 or approved statistics course (e.g., Psych 311 or Soc 321)

Elective from the College of Arts and Sciences (3 credits required)

  • Psychology 324: Psychology of Women
  • Psychology 350: Social Psychology
  • Sociology 360: Social Deviance
  • Sociology 362: Juvenile Delinquency
  • Sociology 384: Sociology of Gender
  • Women’s Studies 300: Intersections of Race, Class, Gender and Sexuality

University Writing Requirements

  • 2 Writing in the Major [M] courses (6 hours)
  • Writing Portfolio
  • Writing Proficiency Exam
    (Portfolio and proficiency exam required no later than first semester after earning 60 credits.)

Foreign Language

2 years high school or 1 year college (in same language)
