{"id":826,"date":"2016-06-16T20:21:15","date_gmt":"2016-06-16T20:21:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stagewp.cas.wsu.edu\/crmj-newsletter-wds\/?page_id=826"},"modified":"2016-08-30T18:22:09","modified_gmt":"2016-08-30T18:22:09","slug":"study-abroad-2016","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/crmj.wsu.edu\/newsletter\/study-abroad-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"Study Abroad 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<br \/>\n<section id=\"builder-section-1472244710943\" class=\"row single gutter pad-top\">\n<div style=\"\" class=\"column one \">\n<header>\n<h2>Study Abroad 2016<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n<p><strong>Faculty-Led Program<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Criminal Justice Study in The Netherlands<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>CRM J 491 Spring 2016<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Melanie-Angela Neuilly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Faculty Director<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over spring break 2016, eight WSU criminal justice majors accompanied professor Melanie-Angela Neuilly on a study abroad program to the Netherlands. \u00a0This unique experience was a\u00a0cooperative project with University of Idaho professor Brian Wolf and eight UI sociology-criminology students. \u00a0After two years of taking students to England, the third installment of this Criminal Justice Study Abroad faculty-led program took the students to The Netherlands. The purpose of the trip was to afford students an up-close examination of the Dutch approach to criminal justice as well as first-hand insight into international policing and court organizations.<\/p>\n<p>First, the group spent several days in The Hague visiting national and\u00a0international institutions of justice. \u00a0Visits included trips to international\u00a0institutions\u00a0such as the International\u00a0Criminal Court,\u00a0the\u00a0International Criminal Tribunal for\u00a0the former Yugoslavia, and the European Police Office (Europol). \u00a0Also in The Hague, students gained insight\u00a0into\u00a0security\u00a0concerns\u00a0specific\u00a0to the Netherlands through visits to the National Coordinator for Security and\u00a0Counterterrorism and\u00a0National Rapporteur on Trafficking in Human Beings and Sexual Violence.<\/p>\n<p>The second part of the trip was in Amsterdam where students were exposed to varying perspectives on the policing and regulation of vice. \u00a0This included a law\u00a0enforcement guided tour of Amsterdam\u2019s famous red light district. \u00a0For contrasting perspectives, students also heard talks from\u00a0the founder of a sex workers union and the\u00a0proprietor\u00a0of a cannabis information center.
