Research Overview

Research

Graduate and undergraduate students in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology have the opportunity to engage directly with cutting-edge research and applied projects through the Washington State Institute for Criminal Justice, Washington State Data Exchange for Public Safety (WADEPS) and the Complex Social Interactions Lab. Faculty affiliated with these initiatives employ a wide range of methodologies—including behavioral science, policy evaluation, data visualization, and video analysis—and regularly offer courses, research assistantships, and mentorship opportunities for students to develop their own expertise in these areas.

Students gain hands-on experience with tools such as statistical software, qualitative coding platforms, and video analysis technologies, and may contribute to projects involving law enforcement data, use-of-force reporting, and body-worn camera footage. These experiences prepare students for careers in criminal justice, public policy, data analysis, and academic research.

The department also maintains strong ties with interdisciplinary research centers and public safety agencies, providing students with opportunities to participate in collaborative projects, fieldwork, and applied research that directly informs policy and practice in Washington State and beyond.

Where methodological innovation meets public service—empowering students to shape the future of criminal justice.
