Breaking the cycle: Understanding incarceration and reentry

On October 2, 2024, the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology welcomed David L. Garlock to speak to our graduate and undergraduate students about incarceration and reentry. David, a returning citizen, reentry professional, and criminal justice advocate, shared his insights on rehabilitation and the importance of an equitable justice system.
David’s journey is truly inspiring. After serving over 13 years of a 25-year sentence in Alabama for taking the life of his abuser, he was released on parole in 2013. During his incarceration, David pursued multiple educational opportunities and earned a bachelor’s degree from Eastern University. Now, David dedicates his life to educating the next generation of criminal justice professionals and advocating for meaningful reform.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to David for sharing his story with us. Our students found his talk enlightening and enjoyed learning about and making prison food.

National standards set for community supervision officers in adult treatment courts

Faith Lutze (PhD) collaborated with Jacqueline van Wormer (PhD) (’90 BA Crim. Jus., ’92 MA Crim. Jus., 2010 PhD Crim. Jus.) of All Rise (formally known as the National Association of Drug Court Professionals, NADCP) to design national practice guidelines for Community Supervision Officers (CSO) who serve within the Adult Treatment Court Model. According to All Rise, “These practice guidelines are designed to provide treatment court teams, community supervision officers, and the community supervision agency with a deep understanding of the role and function of the CSO within the treatment court team.” The guidelines are designed to translate research into practice by presenting research findings, implementation tips, and examples from the field to assist both community corrections and treatment court professionals with accessible strategies to implement evidence-based practices.
