Exploring history through criminology: A unique classroom experience

Melanie-Angela Neuilly with students
Melanie-Angela Neuilly, Associate Professor, Department Chair and her CRMJ 480 class

Associate Professor Melanie-Angela Neuilly recently led her criminal justice and criminology capstone course in an innovative exploration of the Salem Witch Trials. Dressed in Puritan witch attire, Professor Neuilly brought the historical period to life, engaging her students in a unique and immersive learning experience.

The course applied criminological theories to the historical facts of the Salem Witch Trials, encouraging students to examine the events of 1692 using their criminological knowledge. This framework then allowed them to better understand more recent or current events.

This hands-on approach not only enriches students’ understanding of criminology but also highlights the relevance of historical events in modern society.
